DISEASE SURVEILLANCE HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETED FOR THE YEAR

Mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus in the neighboring Malheur County, Oregon and Gem County, Idaho. Positive West Nile virus has also been detected in mosquitoes trapped in Payette County.

There has been no positive disease activity noted in Canyon County as of today September 27.

Mosquito surveillance has ended in Canyon County and year end reports will be available by December.

HOMEOWNER'S TREATMENTS FOR FLOODWATER MOSQUITOES OR IRRIGATED PASTURE MOSQUITOES

Both of these for mentioned species of mosquitoes can be very troublesome and ruthless. They fly and bite at all hours of the day and hatch off in very high numbers. Both of these types of mosquitoes will rest in grass, tall vegetation, overgrown weedy areas and shrubbery. Control can be difficult because of their unpredictability in hatching which may be tied to irrigation schedules and hot weather.

To help in keeping Floodwater Mosquitoes and Irrigated Pasture mosquitoes numbers down, yards, weedy areas, shrubbery may be sprayed with one of two products:

Tempo (active ingredient: Cyfluthrin) which may be sold under the brand name: Bayer Advanced Power Force.

Talstar (active ingredient: Bifenthrin) sold under different brand names such as Talstar, Bifen T/I.

Both of these products are available locally from Farm and Garden and Ranch supply stores.
